Route Details and Itinerary
14:00: Check in at Lao Orchid Hotel
19:00: Meet and greet dinner at Lao Kitchen Restaurant, Rue Hengboun, Vientiane
Day 1: Vientiane to Vang Vieng
196 km
Namsong Bridge Bungalows
8:00 - Collect bikes from bike shop
Pick up the bikes, sign rental agreements and hit it. The plan is to be finished and on the road by 10 am at the latest.
We will try to get away from the bike shop by 10 am at the latest. Don't be fooled by the low kilometres, this will take us about 6 hours depending on stops. Lunch will be at Nam Ngeum floating restaurant, on the largest hydroelectric dam in Laos. Hopefully we'll arrive in Vang Vieng mid-afternoon and have time to explore a little.
Day 2: Free day in Vang Vieng
0 km
Namsong Bridge Bungalows
Once little more than a bus stop on the long journey between Vientiane at the Thai border and the World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng has managed to become a destination in its own right – and rightfully so. While the town still isn't much more than three streets and a bus station, it is the stunning scenery of river and rock formations surrounding this place that will keep you dreaming of Laos long after you've settled back into real life.
Day 3: Vang Vieng to Long Cheng
183 km
Long Cheng
Not long after leaving Vang Vieng on road 13 South, we'll turn off and head east through fairly remote country and should be in Long Cheng in 4 or 5 hours, depending on road conditions. If the local authorities won't allow us to stay there, we'll press on to Phonsavan, another 50 km further.
Day 4: Ride to Phonsavan
60 km
Vansana Plain of Jars
It's only about a 60 km ride to Phonsavan but the roads may not be the best. Expect it to take about 3 hours, leaving us plenty of time to visit the Plain of Jars. Phonsavan also has an awesome pizza restaurant, run by a Moroccan Italian! The best pizza in Laos.
Day 5: Ride to Kong Lor Village
360 km
SpringRiver Resort
Another early start as it's a long way to Kong Lor, however the roads are expected to be fairly good and we'll be riding through some very scenic country for most of the day. Lunch will be in a village along the way.
Day 6: Kong Lor Cave
0 km
SpringRiver Resort
Konglor (sometimes spelt as Kong Lor) is a small village that is slowly becoming more famous for the Konglor Cave. The village has a number of homestays, a few guesthouses which have their own onsite restaurant, and a couple places that bill themselves as resorts.
Another long ride with lunch somewhere along the way. Traffic will be more hectic the closer we get to the capital. ETA 4 pm and we will go straight to the rental place to drop off the bikes before checking into the hotel.
Dinner will be at Lao Kitchen.
Day 8: Departure
0 km
Own arrangement
Some people will depart today, some will fly to Sam Neua to visit the caves at Vieng Xay and Lima Site 85.
